Henry Hazlitt

The government never lends or gives anything to business that it does not take away from business...When the government makes loans or subsidies to business, what it does is to tax successful private business in order to support unsuccessful private business.
HAZLITT, HENRY, Economics in One Lesson, Chap. VI, Credit Diverts Production

The request of Industry to the government is as modest as that of Diogenes to Alexander: "Stand out of my sunshine."
BENTHAM

Libertarians understand a very simple fact of life: Government doesn't work. It can't deliver the mail on time, it doesn't keep our cities safe, it doesn't educate our children properly. But people love to play a gigantic game of "let's pretend": Let's pretend the War on Poverty really does help poor people. Let's pretend the War on Drugs really does reduce drug abuse and crime. Let's pretend the right government program can keep the wrong people out of the country.
BROWNE, HARRY

A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves money from the Public Treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidate promising the most benefits from the Public Treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy always followed by dictatorship.
Alexander Tyler

No one who's seen it in action can say the phrase "government help" without either laughing or crying."
Mark Twain

"The size of the federal budget is not an appropriate barometer of social conscience or charitable concern."
Ronald Reagan

"Nothing is easier than spending public money. It does not appear to belong to anybody. The temptation is overwhelming to bestow it on somebody."
Calvin Coolidge

When a private entity does not produce the desired results, it is (certain body parts excepted) done away with. But a public entity gets bigger.
PJ O'Rourke

"The State is that great fiction by which everyone tries to live at the expense of everyone else. Everyone wants to live at the expense of the State. They forget that the State lives at the expense of everyone."
Frederic Bastiat

"In recent years we have witnessed numerous marches on Washington in which one group or another has demanded new "rights." Frequently, such rights have not meant freedom from state control, but rather entitlement to state action, protection, or subsidy. In the process of yielding to the 'will of the people' and creating new rights, the state invariably enlarges itself and its bureaucracy. Each new right seems to demand a new agency to guarantee it, administer it, or deliver it."
John W. Whitehead

A government that is big enough to give you all you want is big enough to take it all away.
Barry Goldwater

Welfare's purpose should be to eliminate, as far as possible, the need for its own existence.
Ronald Reagan

"Though the people support the Government, the Government should not support the people."
Grover Cleveland

"Man, no doubt, owes many other moral duties to his fellow men; such as to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless, care for the sick, protect the defenseless, assist the weak, and enlighten the ignorant. But these are simply moral duties, of which each man must be his own judge, in each particular case, as to whether, and how , and how far, he can, or will perform them."
Lysander Spooner

Don't go around saying the world owes you a living. The world owes you nothing. It was here first.
Mark Twain

Government redistribution of wealth has never worked in the past and will not in the future. It sets up a standard of grievance. It says, "You're successful, can I steal from you?" What you want is a standard of achievement. "How do I get to be successful, too?" You either have a system where you say, "Would you like to learn how to be rich, would you like to learn how to be successful?" Or you have a system where you say, "Well, you really ought to feel envy and resentment, so let's see if we can mug them."
Newt Gingrich

You have no more right to consume happiness without producing it than to consume wealth without producing it.
George Bernard Shaw

When you subsidize poverty and failure, you get more of both.
James Dale Davidson

Any society that focuses on wealth redistribution over wealth creation will soon find itself with very little wealth.

"Why should government deprive the successful of the fruits of their success, or even the fortunate of their good fortune, just because others do not enjoy the same?"
Tibor R. Machan

"Mr. President, if we spend borrowed money our children will have to be taxed to repay, does this not violate the principle 'No taxation without representation'?"
Tibor R. Machan
