Even without the multinational flavor of the euro, british currency still has some fascinating collecting options.
The two pound coin has neen issued since 1997, a quote from Sir Isaac Newton is inscribed around its edge:
"standing on the shoulders of giants"
The one pound coin runs through a 5 year cycle of designs, one for each kingdom of the united kingdom.
The motto inscribed around the edge of each coin also varies with the cycle.
The british, english and northern ireland designs all have DECUS ET TUTAMEN, latin for 'an ornament and a safeguard'.
The welsh designs have PLEIDOL WYF I'M GWLAD, meaning 'true am I to my country', which is taken from the welsh national anthem.
On scottish designs, NEMO ME IMPUNE LACESSIT is inscribed, latin for 'no-one provokes me with impunity', which really says something about scottish culture.

El lema lo usaba la célebre Black Watch, y luego los Highland Royal Fusiliers.
Creo que ahora que todas esas unidades se fusionaron en un único Regiment of Scotland también adoptó el lema histórico.
Desde el punto de vista de la militaria, eran espléndidos los badges de plata que se usaban en el tradicional glengarry

De mi residencia en el UK me sobró una bolsita de monedas entre las que hay varias de one pound:

Una de 2004 que en el borde (edge) no tiene ningún motto sino una especie de dibujo o filigrana.
Tengo una NEMO(1984), dos PLEIDOL (1985 y 1990) y una DECUS (1992).
No conocía esto, muy interesante.
Sabias que la Union Jack tambien es la superposición de las banderas de los reinos? Las cruces de Saint Patrick, Saint Andrews y Saint George, Escocia, Irlanda e Inglaterra. Gales, para cuando se institucionalizó al Union Jack ya se habia unido a Inglaterra mucho antes, por eso no está. Si te fijas hay un monton de codigos, como por ejemplo la cruz de San Patricio no corre por el centro de la de san Andres para indicar que no hay diferencia en status de ambas. En algún lado lo leí.
